Native American Art
Philosophical Value
Just as the cultural differences
between Native American tribes altered due to expansionism and
isolationism, so did the differences in the general beliefs and
attitudes of these tribes.
While the root philosophy
of a tribe was no doubt conveyed from its origin, it was ultimately
shaped out of the necessities of life over generations.
The beliefs of the people
are transformed over time by the experiences and circumstance
of the past and present, and justification from adaptation can
become the basis for belief and a way of life if supported for
a prolonged period of time.
Vast differences in philosophical
value, like most aspects of a given Native American tribe, are
transferred in the artistic expression used to garnish and decorate
the objects its members create.
This is evident in the
contrast of symbol, style, and form of pieces created by a peaceful
nation such as the Pueblo and a warrior nation such as the Iroquois.
