Cathleen "Collateta" Sandia Hopi Potter - Native American Artist

My name is Cathleen Collateta Sandia a Hopi Potter from a Hopi-Tewa family. My father is Tom Collateta Sr. who is Hopi-Tewa and is known for his kachina carving. My mother is Antonita Collateta of Jemez Pueblo and is known for her Hopi pottery and traditional embroidery.

I learned the art of pottery at the young age of 16. My grandmother Sarah Collateta has taught me the intricacies of ancient designs as well as the techniques of painting them. I learned to mold my own pots and shape them in many different styles. My pottery is all hand coil, made with natural Hopi clay and the paint is all from natural pigments. I am best known for my Hopi wedding vases, which are contemporary, tall and simple in its elegance.

At the New Mexico State Fair I was awarded the First Place and received a plaque for Best of Show on my wedding vase.

My husband, Adrian Sandia, and I work together to produce the pottery. We work in our home at Jemez Pueblo. We have three children Maelene, Audrianna and Dylon, who are also learning at our side.

We are very proud of our work and the gift we are blessed with. We hope that it will bring you many years of happiness.
