Native American Art
Native
American MILAGROS
Milagros is the Spanish
word for miracle or surprise. Milagros is also the popular name
in Hispanic Folk lore for small cast replicas of body parts, animals,
fruits or vegetables.
Produced in silver or gold,
Milagros were hung on a statue of a saint whose favor was requested.
The Milagros would match the request. If healing of a hand or
foot was required, a Milagros of a hand or foot was attached to
the saint as a request. If a bountiful crop was requested, cast
replicas of fruit or vegetables would be used. Milagros were also
pinned to church walls.
As Spanish missionaries
infiltrated Native American culture in the Southwest, the prayerful
offering of Milagros, similar in purpose as Native American fetishes,
easily blended with the ritualistic offerings made by Native Americans
in the region.
